Stop spending money on commercial brand shaving cream. In four easy steps you can make your own, all-natural homemade shaving cream recipe that will leave your legs smooth and moisturized.
It’s is summertime! Which means it’s the season for warm sunny days, gardening, swimming, iced tea, bonfires … and shaving. You know what I’m talking about ladies.
Shorts. Capris. Sleeveless tops. Dare I say swimsuits.
Whether you like it or not, our razor becomes our faithful companion come summer.
For most of my life I used various commercial brand shaving creams. Everything from gels and body washes to creams and even waxes (ouch!). They worked well apart from the occasional razor burn or nick on my leg. But unfortunately, they are full of man-made synthetic chemicals that are difficult to pronounce, let alone define. My theory is that if a word uses every letter in the alphabet, it cannot be natural. Or good for your body.
My desire to use natural body care products first started with the removal of many store bought items from our home. Next, I began creating homemade beauty products. I tried everything from lotions and salves to chapstick and soap. When I whipped up a batch of mint cocoa shaving cream, I was thrilled with the results. The combination of coconut oil and grapeseed oil left the skin feeling smooth and velvety where I didn’t even need to use lotion to moisturize my legs after I shaved. In addition to smooth skin, there were no nicks or cuts either! The light scent of chocolatey cocoa butter combined with the invigorating smell of peppermint was like a Baskin Robbins dream come true. Peppermint essential oil was added to this homemade shaving cream recipe not only for its delightful fragrance but also to help soothe and relax muscles and joints. Tea tree essential oil was selected for this recipe to cleanse and repair the skin.

Mint Cocoa Shaving Cream Recipe
Step 1
Combine the coconut oil, grapeseed oil and cocoa butter in a canning jar. Set the jar down in a small saucepan, creating a makeshift double boiler. Fill the saucepan with a couple inches of water. Turn the burner onto low heat until everything has melted.
Step 2
Carefully remove the jar from heat and pour the liquid into a mixing bowl. Place the bowl into the fridge for 30-45 minutes or until the mixture begins to set up and become solidified. (You want the shaving cream to be firm and mostly complete solid after it has been chilled.)
Step 3
Once the shaving cream has set up, remove from fridge. Using a hand mixer, whip the shaving cream until light and fluffy. Add in the essential oils and whip for a few more seconds.
Step 4
Spoon the shaving cream into a jar, tin or container with a tight fitting lid. Store out of direct sunlight. Use within 6 months.
Tips for Making Homemade Shaving Cream
- Grapeseed oil was selected for this recipe because of its ability to soak into the skin quickly. You can easily substitute sunflower or sweet almond oil.
- While the mixture is chilling, periodically check on it to see if it has set up yet
- You will know when the shaving cream has set up as it will have a murky coloring and the consistency of a hard cream or candle wax.
- Don’t like the mint cocoa scent? Play around with different essential oils to create a scent that you like. Chamomile, lavender and eucalyptus are all great choices.
- Coconut oil does make the tub slippery when wet. Rinse your shower thoroughly to prevent slipping.
