Clean your home without harsh chemicals by making a bottle of this DIY all-purpose cleaning spray. Made with just four simple ingredients, you’ll love how quick this cleaner comes together and how well it cleans an assortment of surfaces and settings in your home.

Tough baked-on food covering the stove top. Paw print lined bay windows. Soap scum covered sinks. Life on the homestead, or in any working home can get pretty filthy at times.

While I don’t mind cleaning up our house, sometimes I just plain don’t have the time. Cooking from scratch, gardening and running multiple businesses keeps our family busy. If I’m going to take the time to check off several cleaning chores on my to-do list, I need a cleaner than is convenient and effective. Instead of grabbing a bottle of some commercial made cleaner filled with unhealthy ingredients, I prefer to tidy up our home with a natural all purpose cleaner made with vinegar and essential oils. In a matter of moments, I can create a multi-use spray to tackle almost every chore in the house.

This toxic-free cleaner gets the job done while leaving a pleasing aroma, making the house smell clean and refreshed. For ideas on how to make an all-purpose cleaner with essential oils, take a look at the DIY cleaner tutorial below.

Do Natural Cleaning Products Actually Work?

Yes, natural cleaning products are very effective at cleaning dirt, dust and grime in your home. Occasionally you may have to use a little bit of extra elbow grease but personally I have found that homemade cleaners get the job done without adding toxins and artificial fragrances into the home.

What are the Basic Ingredients for Making a Homemade Cleaning Spray?

Vinegar – Vinegar is a powerhouse cleaning agent when it comes to tackling dirty jobs in the house. This acidic liquid is excellent for removing grease, dissolving soap scum and penetrating dirty spots on the floor. It can be used as a disinfectant to clean tubs and toilets. Distilled white vinegar is best for cleaning and can be purchased at any supermarket.

Distilled Water – Water is a staple in many homemade cleaners, including this recipe for an all-purpose cleaner. Distilled water, rather than tap water works best because it does not leave any surface residue and helps to inhibit bacteria growth thus rendering your natural cleaner a longer shelf life.

Essential Oils – With antibacterial traits, antiviral capabilities and other cleaning properties, essential oils can be an excellent choice for cleaning your home. Not only can they break up greasy messes on the kitchen countertops, they also leave behind a pleasant scent. Check out the list beneath to discover some of my top essential oil choices.

Best Essential Oils for Cleaning

Citrus oils are my favorite essential oils to use for cleaning and even soap making. But if lemon and lime aren’t your thing, there are a variety of other wonderful choices to clean your home with.

  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Lime
  • Tea tree
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Clove
  • Cinnamon

How to Use a DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

This do-it-yourself all purpose cleaning spray can be used on a variety of surfaces including walls, baseboards, cabinets, countertops and in the bathroom. For lightly soiled areas simply spray and wipe away with a rag or cloth. To remove stubborn marks and scum, spray the surface with the all purpose cleaner and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Follow up with a good scrub from a clean cloth.

If you are uncertain as to how this cleaner will work on a particular surface, test the spray in an inconspicuous spot before cleaning the entire area. This vinegar based cleaner is not recommended for natural stone surfaces such as granite or marble.
