Promote a restful nights sleep and deep relaxation with this convenient DIY magnesium spray. Easy-to-make, simple to use and made with natural ingredients.
Magnesium is an essential mineral that the body needs to thrive. It plays a role in our sleep, how we react to stress, our energy levels, how our muscles function and many more purposes.
Unfortunately so many of us are deficient in magnesium. While you can take a supplement to increase your magnesium levels, I usually prefer to source magnesium through foods such as avocados, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate (yum!).
Another way to boost magnesium intake is through a topical application. A handful of magnesium chloride flakes can be tossed into a bath salt, a lotion or a DIY magnesium spray.
Our family likes to spray our legs or belly about 10 minutes before bed — usually during our routine of brushing our teeth and getting ready for a good nights rest. Afterwards we hop into bed, place our head on the pillow and drift off to slumberland. I have personally found that I sleep more soundly and for longer when I apply a magnesium spray or lotion to my body before I hit the hay.
What is Magnesium Oil?
Magnesium oil isn’t actually oil at all. It is made by mixing together hot water with magnesium chloride flakes until they are dissolved. The reason we refer to it as oil is because it can leave an oily feeling after you spray or rub it into your skin.
Many Americans are not getting enough magnesium into their daily diet. Using a topical magnesium oil spray can be a great way to improve magnesium levels.

1/2 cup (3.25 ounces) magnesium flakes
1/2 cup (4 ounces) distilled water, warmed
1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
1/2 teaspoon jojoba or sweet almond oil
5 drops essential oil (lavender, chamomile, sweet orange), optional
Directions
In a heatproof container, warm the distilled water. Add magnesium flakes and stir until dissolved. Allow to cool to room temperature prior to adding next ingredients.
Stir in vegetable glycerin, jojoba oil and essential oils, if using. Pour into a glass spray bottle.
To use, gently shake bottle, then spray on legs or belly. I usually do this about 10 minutes prior to going to bed.
Tips
- To increase the speed at which this magnesium oil dries, add 1/2 teaspoon of witch hazel. Do note, some find the addition of witch hazel to be drying to skin.
- If you only have small spray bottles, you can store the remainder of the magnesium oil in a mason jar or amber bottle and store in a cool, dark place until you’re ready to use it.
- After spraying on the skin, some feel a tingling or itchy sensation. This is normal. If it bothers you or irritates your skin, you can dilute the solution.
- For a relaxing experience before bed, spray magnesium oil on legs and feet, then gently massage into the skin.
FAQ
What is a Good Carrier Oil for Magnesium Spray?
Good carrier oils for the best magnesium oil spray include jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or fractionated coconut oil.
How Do You Deal With Magnesium Oil Tingling?
When our family first started using magnesium oil, we all felt a tingling or itchy feeling on our skin. As odd as it was, it is a normal occurrence and is nothing to worry about. The more we used it, the less we felt the sensation. To prevent this, you can dilute it, spray on less sensitive areas like your feet or use the magnesium oil in a homemade lotion.
