Reward your dog with the scrumptious taste of these homemade dog treats with fresh milled flour. They are crafted with delicious pumpkin and peanut butter, making them a soft and healthy dog biscuit.
Fresh milled flour is a big part of our life on the homestead. We use it to bake up a loaf of bread, make cookies and even pan fry a batch of homegrown okra.
One day when our dogs were down to the last morsel of jerky, and our monthly Costco trip wasn’t for another week, I knew I needed to make them something to tide them over. And since I am a proud fresh milled mama, I figured I could create a batch of homemade dog treats with fresh milled flour.
With just a few common ingredients that dogs love — peanut butter, pumpkin, eggs and honey — and a cute little bone shaped cookie cutter, I baked up a batch of dog cookies that sustained them until I could make it to the store.
Both of our dogs, even the one that I refer to as “low carb” (he doesn’t like bread, crackers or anything fried) enjoyed the homemade dog treats and asked for seconds and even thirds!
If you have a furry friend in your home, give these treats a try. They are truly the best homemade dog treat recipes using natural ingredients.

Tips
- I recommend using natural organic peanut butter. This kind of peanut butter does not contain added ingredients or artificial sweeteners.
- Never use peanut butter with xylitol. Xylitol can be deadly to dogs.
- When rolling out the dough, I usually only roll out the scraps one or two more times as excessive rolling can create a tough treat.
- Use any type or size of cookie cutter. I selected a dog bone shape that was a few inches wide. For smaller cookie cutters, reduce the baking time.
- These homemade dog treats with peanut butter should be firm but have a soft texture to them after they are baked. For a crunchier treat, you will need to roll the dough thin and reduce the baking time.
- Store baked treats in an airtight container. I have two dogs so the treats usually get eaten fairly quickly and I don’t have to worry about them going bad. If you are concerned, you can put them in the fridge or freezer.

Makes: about 22 dog treats
Ingredients
2 1/3 cups freshly milled soft white wheat flour
1 egg
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons honey
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 350° F. In a mixing bowl or stand mixer, add egg, peanut butter, water, pumpkin puree and honey until creamy and smooth. Mix in flour, cinnamon and salt. Dough should be thick like cookie dough.
Lightly flour your work surface. Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thick and use a cookie cutter to cut dough into shapes. Place dog treats onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Gather dough scraps, roll and cut again. Bake for 18 minutes, until golden brown. Smaller cookies may take less time to bake so keep an eye on them.
Allow treats to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. Transfer treats to wire rack to finish cooling. Store homemade dog treats in an airtight container or freeze for the future.
