“I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.”

Sometimes I feel a little like the big, bad wolf in the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Not full of anger but rather full of congestion and mucus. When I am ill, sneezing, coughing and sniffling, I feel as if I can blow our house in with the power of my sneezing!

Being sick ain’t any fun.

But there are some natural remedies that can help support your immune system when you’re under the weather.

Herbs are a great way to help heal your body. Oregano, echinacea, peppermint, and yarrow are just a few of our favorite herbs to take when sick. Herbal marshmallow hot chocolate or an herbal tea are also a fantastic method to get the herbs into your system while soothing your scratchy throat.

Another way to help support your body during a bug or cold virus is by using a homemade shower steamer. Shower steamers, also known as a shower bomb are similar to bath bombs but without the added oils and moisturizers — which is great since you’re standing up and don’t want a slippery shower floor — yikes! The shower bomb works in a similar way where it will dissolve over time and soothe your body. Think of them as a natural vaporizer but without the added junk that some commercial made products can have in them.

How to Use a Shower Steamer

To use your diy shower steamer, place at the back of your shower where it will be splashed but the water but not soaked. As you shower, the water will slowly dissolve the shower bomb, releasing the aromatic essential oils, helping to soothe and relax your body.

Makes: 5-6 shower steamers

Ingredients

1 cup (286 g) baking soda
1/2 cup  (118 g) citric acid
3/4 – 1 tsp peppermint essential oil
3/4 – 1 tsp eucalyptus essential oil
1 Tbs dried mint leaves, crushed
Witch hazel

Materials

Silicone mold
1/4 measuring cup
Mixing bowl
Spatula
Spray bottle
Plate or cutting board
Rubber gloves

Instructions

In a bowl, mix together the baking soda and citric acid. If clumps form, crush them with your hands.

Add the essential oils, stirring them with a spatula. Avoid using your bare hands with this high amount of essential oils.

Once combined, add the witch hazel into a small spray bottle. Spritz the mixture with the witch hazel 3 to 4 times. Stir to incorporate. Using gloves, form the mixture into a ball. If it’s still crumbly, give the shower steamer another light spray of witch hazel.

Sprinkle the dried mint leaves into the bottom of your 1/4 measuring cup. Pack the shower bomb mixture into the measuring cup, pressing firmly as you fill. Using a flat surface, such as a plate, platter or cutting board, turn the measuring cup upside down onto your surface. Gently pop out your steamer and allow it to dry for 3 or so hours. When dry, store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Place at the back of your shower out of direct contact with water. As you shower, the splashes of water will slowly dissolve the shower bomb. Use as needed.
