Cold winter days call for cozy food! Some of our favorites, especially after a long day outside in the snow, include a bowl of homestead chili, sugar free apple pie, cinnamon butterscotch scones and a large mug of this healthy hot chocolate recipe with raw milk.

The best part about making homemade hot chocolate from scratch is that you get to control the ingredients and the flavorings. You can make it as healthy or as sweet as you desire.

If you desire a rich drink, add a bit more cacao powder; if you prefer it decadent, pour in a splash of heavy cream. A bit of vanilla and a pinch of real salt round out the flavor. We like to top our cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Go ahead, put up your feet, grab a good book or pop in your favorite movie and cozy up to a warm cup of homemade hot chocolate.

Agave or honey – Adds a touch of sweetness without overdoing it.

Vanilla – no drink is complete without a teaspoon of vanilla.

Tips

  • Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the milk. If you keep the milk below 118° F, you will still be able to enjoy the health benefits of raw milk.
  • If you don’t have any raw milk on hand, you can use regular whole milk instead. The higher fat in whole milk adds a creamy flavor and helps in the digestibility of the naturally sweetened hot chocolate.
  • If you don’t have any raw cacao powder, simply swap out the cacao for a high quality cocoa powder.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon to spice up this healthy hot chocolate recipe with raw milk.
  • For a peppermint flavored hot chocolate, reduce the vanilla to 1/2 teaspoon and add in a 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract.
  • If you have any trouble with the cocoa powder not mixing in, you can always run the hot chocolate through a blender for a few seconds.
  • Grab a dark chocolate bar and zester and grate the chocolate on top of the cup of hot chocolate with raw milk.
  • If you have a large family, you can easily double or triple the recipe.
