Protect and soothe your lips, using the healing properties of homemade calendula lip balm. Easy to make and created with natural ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil and essential oil.
Our lips are at the forefront of many of our daily activities — talking, eating, drinking, singing, kissing, laughing and so much more. They can get chapped by the heat and wind of the summer (especially if you’re a homesteader and are outside in the garden a lot or taking care of animals) and dry during the harsh winter months. I know here in Ohio, come mid winter, my lips can become pretty irritated.
A great way to protect and soothe your lips is by using the healing combination of calendula, shea butter and several skin-loving oils. All of these natural ingredients are used to make this homemade calendula lip balm recipe.
If you don’t have any calendula, try plantain, comfrey or lemon balm. You can also swap out the orange essential oil for lavender, peppermint or your favorite scent. That is the beauty of DIY skincare, use what you have and make it your own!

How to Make Calendula Oil
You can purchase calendula infused oil or make it yourself. To create the infusion at home, add 1/4 cup dried calendula to a half pint jar. Fill the rest of the way with olive oil, making sure the herbs are completely covered. Cap the mason jar with a lid, place within a paper bag and sit on the sill of a warm, sunny window. Shake the jar daily. Within 7 days, the infused oil will be ready to use to create your homemade lip balm.
