Probiotic Smoothie Recipes for Gut Health

If you’ve ever made kefir at home using kefir grains, you know how quickly your fridge can fill up with many jars of milk kefir. There are an assortment of ways you can use the kefir such as to make dip, cheesecake, sourdough bread, overnight oatmeal and low sugar desserts. One of the simplest ways to use milk kefir is in a smoothie. Instead of using traditional milk or yogurt to make a creamy smoothie, we like to swap it out for a cup of kefir.

Kefir smoothies are fabulous at any time of the day. While I often blend up a smoothie for an after meal treat, others prefer to eat it at breakfast time or as a snack during the afternoon. Most smoothie recipes contain some type of dairy, frozen fruit and occasionally a natural sweetener. In the kefir smoothie recipes below, you will find seven different variations. I’ve included a common favorite, berry medley, made with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. You’ll also discover new, exceptionally delightful recipes such as tropical paradise with pineapple, coconut and mango as well as cinnamon mocha and chocolate peanut butter. But my personal favorite is blueberry crisp. It’s like liquid pie in a glass. Delish!

How Do I Make Kefir at Home?

To quickly make a glass of kefir at home, add 2-3 teaspoons of kefir grains to a pint size glass jar. Pour two cups of milk over top. Securely seal the jar with a a plastic lid. Set the jar on your countertop away from direct sunlight and allow to ferment for 24 hours. The kefir is finished when it tastes sour and has a consistency of drinkable yogurt. Remove the milk kefir grains and enjoy a glass of fresh milk kefir.

What Fruit is Good With Kefir?

Personally I have yet to find a fruit that does not pair well with kefir. Dried dates, frozen pineapple, cherries, peaches and bananas are delicious when blended into kefir. Berries, especially blueberries are not only delicious when mixed with milk kefir, they are a wonderful source of prebiotics and are anti-inflammatory.

How Much Kefir Should I Drink a Day?

It is entirely up to you. Generally 1-2 cups of kefir a day is enough for a healthy gut. If you are new to drinking milk kefir, start with a very small amount and slowly your way up in order to not overwhelm your gut with a variety of new bacteria.

What Are the Best Add Ins for Smoothies?

Besides milk kefir, fruit, juice and extracts, here are a few other great smoothie add-ins you may want to try:

Tropical Paradise Kefir Smoothie

With just one sip, the tasty combination of pineapple, mango and coconut in this smoothie recipe will have you dreaming of a vacation to the beach with sunny skies and ocean views. A perfect refreshing drink on a hot summer day.

Serves: 1-2

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups kefir
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 cup frozen mango
2 tablespoons shredded coconut

Directions

In a blender combine all ingredients, blend until completely smooth. Pour into a glass and consume immediately.

Berry Medley Kefir Smoothie

Blend milk kefir, a banana, a scoop of jam and your favorite berries to create this delicious berry medley smoothie. If needed, this recipe lays the foundations for the ability to hide medicinal herbs and super greens, for an extra dose of nutrition.

Serves: 1

Ingredients

1 cup kefir
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries and/or blackberries)
1 1/2 tablespoons raspberry jam

Directions

In a blender add the kefir, banana, strawberries, mixed berries and jam. Blend until combined and smooth. Serve and enjoy!

Cinnamon Mocha Kefir Smoothie

Velvety smooth with a bitter bite of espresso and chocolate and a sweet kick of banana, this cinnamon mocha  smoothie is one you won’t want to miss. Serve it as a healthy dessert after a meal or as an alternative to a cup of coffee.

Ingredients

1 cup kefir
1 frozen banana
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon espresso powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
5 ice cubes

Directions

Add kefir, frozen banana, cinnamon spice, espresso powder, vanilla extract and cocoa powder into a blender. Toss in ice cubes. Blend smoothie until combined and ice cubes have been completely crushed.

Blueberry Crisp Kefir Smoothie 

Blueberries, real oats and cinnamon join together to create a blueberry crisp flavor in this incredibly wonderful blueberry kefir smoothie recipe.

Serves: 1

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups kefir
1 frozen banana
1 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt

Directions

Place all ingredients into a blender in the order listed. Secure lid on blender and blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until the desired texture is reached. Pour kefir smoothie into a glass and enjoy.

Orange Cream Kefir Smoothie

Creamy and tart, this citrus smoothie tastes like a liquid creamsicle. Made with 100% orange juice, probiotic-rich kefir and a healthy splash of vanilla extract.

1 cup kefir
1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

1 cup kefir
2 frozen bananas
1/4 cup rolled oats

Ingredients

1 cup kefir
1 frozen banana
2 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons peanut butter
3 ice cubes 

Directions

Place the kefir, banana, cocoa powder, vanilla, peanut butter and ice cubes into the blender with the lid secured. Turn on machine, blend on high until ingredients have become one and have smooth, glossy consistency.
