Probiotic-rich avocado kefir dressing is a healthy and tasty way to add good bacteria to your favorite salads and sliced veggies.

On our homestead summer calls for lots of fresh greens, salads and crisp veggies that practically beg to be dipped into some delicious homemade sauce. With the garden in full swing we have lots of vegetables to choose from. Our homegrown Swiss chard and kale make for a terrific salad and the snow peas are perfect with a dollop of dip.

My go to salad dressing recipe is usually my Italian dressing or occasionally a kefir ranch dressing but sometimes I crave something different. We often have avocados on hand so why not turn them into a dressing for all those garden veggies awaiting me on the countertop?

Blend an avocado with a few herbs, a cup of kefir and a few other kitchen staples and you’ve got a delightfully fresh and healthy avocado kefir dressing. I love that the creamy avocado kefir dressing tastes so fresh and with the addition of milk kefir, I get a great dose of probiotics with my meal.

What is Milk Kefir?

Milk kefir is a type of cultured dairy, typically made using real milk from a cow or goat. There are two ways to make kefir. The most common way is by using kefir grains. The grains are placed into a glass jar, covered in milk and within 24 hours, the milk has been transformed into kefir. The second way to create kefir is by using a packet of powdered milk kefir. This method is useful if you only want a little bit of kefir at a time. However, the package of dried kefir will only last a few times unlike the the kefir grains that will last indefinitely if you take care of them.

Tips for Making Easy Avocado Kefir Dressing

  • You can use fresh herbs if you have them on hand. The general rule of thumb is for every 1 teaspoon of dried herbs, use 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs.
  • If the kefir avocado dressing is too thick, add a few more splashes of milk kefir to thin it out.
  • A shallot gives the dressing a more mild flavor but if you don’t have one on hand, a sweet onion will work.
  • Lemon juice can be swapped for lime juice, if none is available.
  • Add a clove of fermented garlic for more probiotics!
  • A small, personal sized blender really helps create a creamy, pureed dressing.
