Sometimes life stinks. Pets. Diapers. An overcooked dinner that didn’t go quite as planned. All of these things leave a bit of an odor in the home. Living on a homestead, I know all too well of of these situation. We have two dogs, a child and just the other day, after doing a bit of frying to make some parmesan chicken, the kitchen smelt a bit off.

For moments like these, the home needs refreshed. My favorite form of revitalizing stale or stinky air is by opening up a window and letting some fresh air blow through the house. However, that isn’t always possible, such as at the time of this post — it is February and the temperature is in the single digits outside.

Sometimes a crockpot potpourri filled with warm spices and fresh fruit does the trick but when I need an instant fix, I go to grab my bottle of homemade air freshener. It works wonders at deodorizing unpleasant scents like dirty dog smell. Even if our little home smells just fine, a spritz of homemade air freshener spray with witch hazel, adds a comfort to our place.

My favorite part about this diy air freshener spray is that it is quick to put together and uses only natural ingredients. No fear of spraying toxins or unknown chemicals into the air. Just a beautiful aroma that can eliminate odors.

Ingredients for Homemade Air Freshener

Distilled water – works best instead of tap water because it does not leave any surface residue and helps to inhibit bacteria growth.

Witch hazel – This ingredient helps to bind the water and oils together while also helping the scent to last longer in the air. Some grocery stores sell in near the rubbing alcohol, however I usually purchase a bottle from Amazon.

Essential oils or vanilla extract – Natural extracts like vanilla or essential oils such as lemon or orange add a delightful scent to the air. Essential oils help reduce odor while also being beneficial to your home and body which makes them a perfect addition to this homemade air freshener spray. My favorite brand of essential oils is Plant Therapy.

What is the Best Homemade Deodorizer?

Some of the best homemade deodorizers use ingredients such as white vinegar, baking soda, alcohol, spices and essential oils. All of these items are easy to acquire and are terrific at eliminating strong smells.

Many of these common ingredients can be combined to create a home deodorizer that stops the stench in its tracks rather than masking them like fragrant laden aerosol sprays do. You will find that this diy air freshener with essential oils uses a combination of citrus oils and witch hazel or vodka to eliminate odors.
