Strawberry season is here!

Do you know what that means? It’s time for all things strawberry!

Our mini homestead only has space for a handful of strawberry plants, just enough to top our yogurt or ice cream but never enough to preserve to use year around. Thankfully there are several small strawberry farms in the neighboring towns that grow strawberries without spraying them. As I write this blog post, I have 5 quarts of berries to wash and chop up. My favorite way to preserve strawberries is to freeze them. Although this year, I may dehydrate a some to make a few batches of strawberry white chocolate granola bars. Chopping the tops off of strawberries is a bit of a tedious job. But when fall comes, I am always thankful I froze plenty of berries so that I can make several large pots of strawberry applesauce.

When it comes to strawberry season, there are so many delicious ways to use the fruit. A few of our favorite ways are in strawberry lemonade or strawberry pie. This season, I thought I’d change things up a bit. Instead of baking or making jam, I’d toss the berries into into some DIY lip gloss.

I’m typically more of a lip balm type of gal. I use it on those days when the wind chaps my lips or during the winter when the air is so dry is causes my lips to be devoid of all moisture.

But a gal likes to add a splash of glamour to her life now and then.

And a touch of homemade strawberry lip gloss will do just that. The coconut oil and sunflower oil soften and moisturize my lips, while the castor oil gives my lips a shine that lip gloss is famous for. Freeze dried strawberries were added into the lip gloss recipe to add a touch of shimmer, sweetness and color. But don’t worry, the powdered dried strawberries won’t turn your lips a bright red. The coloring only tints the natural lip gloss. Orange essential oil was added to enhance the fruity summer flavor.

If you’re looking for an all-natural lip gloss recipe to brighten your lips this summer, give this simple body care product a try! The easy homemade lip gloss makes about 5-6 small containers. The recipe is perfect for giving away as a gift or as a favor at showers.

How to Make Lip Gloss at Home

Makes: 5-6 containers of lip gloss

Simple Ingredients to Make Lip Gloss

2 Tbs (24 g) castor oil
1 Tbs (18 g) coconut oil
1 Tbs (12 g) sunflower oil
1 scant Tbs (7 g)beeswax
1/4 cup (7 g) freeze dried strawberries, powdered very fine
5 drops orange essential oil

Instructions on How to Make DIY Lip Gloss

In a small heatproof jar, such as a mason jar, add the castor oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil and beeswax. Set the jar into a saucepan with a few inches of water over low heat until the beeswax has melted.

While the beeswax is melting, place the freeze dried strawberries into a spice grinder and grind into a very fine powder. The finer the strawberries are, the less texture there will be in the finished product.

Remove the jar from the pan and stir in the powdered strawberries. Using a fine mesh strainer, stain the mixture to remove any remaining chunks of powder.

Add the essential oil. At this point, the lip gloss will look separated. Using a rubber spatula, stir the mixture continuously for about 3 minutes to completely combine the ingredients. Scoop the lip gloss into small lip gloss containers or jars such as these. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
